The Heart, A Temple Anew

As we journey through this holy season of Lent, let us reflect upon the ancient promise of God to dwell among His people. Our hearts, through purification and grace, are called to become sacred sanctuaries where the Most High truly resides, uniting us in His boundless love.

Grace and peace be unto you, beloved brethren and sisters in Christ, as the dawn breaks upon this Lenten Saturday. The Lenten sun, though gentle, casts long shadows, reminding us of the brevity of our earthly pilgrimage and the eternal light towards which we strive. In these sacred days of purification and renewal, the Church calls us to look deeply within, to prepare our souls as a fitting abode for the Divine Guest.

The Prophecy of the Indwelling God

Our hearts are stirred by the ancient prophecy proclaimed by Ezekiel, wherein the Lord declares: “I will take the children of Israel from among the nations to which they have gone, and will gather them from all sides and bring them back to their own land. I will make them one nation upon the mountains of Israel; one king shall be king for them all… My dwelling place shall be among them.” (Ezekiel 37:21-22a, 26b). This is not merely a promise of physical return, but a profound spiritual vision, perfectly fulfilled in the New Covenant established by our Lord Jesus Christ.

No longer confined to a single tabernacle or temple of stone, God's dwelling place is now His holy Church, and wondrously, the very heart of the baptised believer. What a sublime truth, that the God who fashioned the cosmos, who holds the stars in His hand, desires to take up residence within our humble, fragile hearts! This divine indwelling is the ultimate fruit of Christ's Paschal Mystery, the very end of our salvation: to be so united with God that He lives within us, and we in Him.

Lent: A Time of Sacred Cleansing

Yet, for God to truly dwell within us, our hearts must be made ready. They must be cleansed of the dust of sin, cleared of the clutter of worldly attachments, and purified from the idols we unwittingly erect. This is the very purpose of our Lenten journey: to engage in the spiritual warfare of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, not as ends in themselves, but as means to scour the inner sanctuary of our being. Through these holy disciplines, aided by the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we sweep out the spiritual debris, repair the broken altars, and restore the beauty of the soul's temple, making it a place truly worthy of the Most High.

As the venerable St. Augustine teaches us, concerning this yearning for God:

"You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you."

Indeed, this restlessness is the divine invitation, a call to cease our wandering and to prepare a place for our true rest, which is God Himself, within us.

One Shepherd, One Flock

Ezekiel’s prophecy speaks also of unity: “I will make them one nation… one king shall be king for them all.” In Christ, this unity is realised in His Body, the Church. He is our One Shepherd, and through His sacrifice, He gathers us, His scattered sheep, into one flock. The divisions and doubts that plagued those in the Gospel of John, some believing, others seeking to arrest Him, reflect the fragmented world we still inhabit. But our Catholic faith, universal in its reach, strives to overcome these divisions, binding all peoples into the sacred communion of the Church.

This mission of unity and gathering is precisely what "Sanctus Mission" champions. By supporting Catholic missions, you are extending the very reach of Christ’s unifying love, bringing souls from every nation to become living stones in God’s spiritual temple. And by supporting Catholic artisans, you are helping to adorn these earthly sanctuaries and instruments of worship, reminding us of the heavenly beauty to which we are called, and preparing hearts to receive the Divine Presence.

Embracing Our Sacred Vocation

Let us, therefore, embrace this sacred vocation: to be living temples of the Holy Spirit. Let our Lenten practices be imbued with this profound intention: that each prayer be a fragrant incense, each fast an offering of purity, each act of charity a beautiful adornment for the indwelling God. Let us cultivate silence and recollection, that we may hear the gentle stirrings of the Divine Guest within our hearts. May we always seek to preserve the sanctity of this inner dwelling, guarding it from desecration and illuminating it with the perpetual lamp of faith.

As we contemplate the glorious presence of God within us, may our lives become a testament to His love, drawing others to seek Him and to build within themselves a sanctuary for the King of Glory.

O Most Holy Trinity, cleanse our hearts, sanctify our souls, and make us evermore worthy dwelling places for Your divine majesty. Unite us in Your truth, protect us in Your love, and empower us to bear witness to Your indwelling presence, now and forever. Amen.
