Echoes of the Empty Tomb: Our Unwavering Call

This morning, as the Easter Octave continues, we reflect on the Risen Christ's command to 'go into all the world.' We are called to be bold witnesses, overcoming doubt and fear with the unwavering truth of His Resurrection. May our lives become living testaments to His saving power.

A Dawn Illuminated by Alleluia

Brothers and sisters in Christ, beloved stewards of sanctifying grace, let us greet this blessed Saturday within the Octave of Easter not merely with the dawn's gentle light, but with the resplendent glory of the Risen Lord illuminating our souls. The very air still vibrates with the triumphant cry of 'Alleluia!' For eight glorious days, Holy Mother Church invites us to bask in the inexhaustible joy of Christ's victory over sin and death, a victory that transforms not only our understanding of eternity but the very fabric of our mortal sojourn.

It is in this season of profound jubilation that our hearts are called to a renewed awakening, a deepening of faith that moves beyond mere assent to a vibrant, active witness. As monks dedicated to prayer and study, we know that true faith is never static; it is a dynamic force that impels us to share the Light we have received.

The Boldness of Unshakeable Witness

Today, the sacred scriptures present before us a powerful tableau: Saints Peter and John, once timid fishermen, now stand before the Sanhedrin, fearless in their proclamation of the Crucified and Risen Christ. The very council that had condemned their Master now quakes at the undeniable truth emanating from these simple men, who had been with Jesus. Their hands had touched Him, their eyes had beheld Him, their ears had heard the very breath of His resurrected being. How then could they remain silent?

“We cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard,” they declared, their voices ringing with the authority of the Holy Spirit, an authority far surpassing any earthly tribunal. Such is the perennial call to every Christian soul: to become an articulate vessel of truth, a living epistle of the Risen Lord. We may not stand before earthly tribunals, yet daily we are presented with opportunities to bear witness – through word, through deed, through the very charity that animates our lives.

The Divine Imperative: Go Forth!

Yet, the Gospel of Mark reminds us of the human struggle with belief, even among those closest to Him. The Risen Lord Himself upbraided the Eleven for their hardness of heart, their slowness to believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. How often do we, too, cling to our doubts, our fears, our worldly anxieties, allowing them to dim the effulgent light of Easter joy?

But Christ, in His infinite mercy and unwavering purpose, does not abandon them to their unbelief. Instead, He gives them the most sublime command: “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” This is not a mere suggestion, dear brethren, but the very heartbeat of our faith, echoing down the corridors of time to each one of us today. It is the divine imperative that undergirds 'Sanctus Mission' and fuels the tireless labor of countless missionaries and artisans, striving to bring the beauty of Christ to every corner of creation.

“Go forth and set the world on fire.” — St. Ignatius of Loyola

This divine mandate calls for a spirit ablaze with Christ's love, as famously encapsulated by St. Ignatius of Loyola, who urged his followers to “Go forth and set the world on fire.” Not with destructive flames, but with the purifying, warming, illuminating fire of divine charity, the very fire that blazes from the empty tomb.

Our Daily Participation in the Great Commission

What does this great commission mean for us, who may not be called to distant lands, but to the often-unseen mission fields of our homes, our workplaces, our local communities? It means cultivating a heart attuned to Christ, allowing His Resurrection to permeate every thought, word, and deed. It means conquering our own unbelief and doubt through fervent prayer, frequent reception of the Sacraments, and diligent study of Holy Scripture. It means daring to speak of the hope that is within us, patiently and charitably, even when faced with indifference or hostility.

It means living lives so radiant with Christ's truth and love that others cannot but wonder at the source of our joy. By supporting the vital work of 'Sanctus Mission,' we are not merely offering alms; we are actively participating in this glorious divine command, enabling those on the front lines to carry the Light where shadows still cling, and to spread the unshakeable hope that Easter bestows upon the world.

May this Easter Octave deepen our resolve, ignite our zeal, and transform us into true disciples, ever ready to speak of what we have seen and heard, bearing witness to the Risen Lord until He comes again in glory.

O Risen Lord, source of all joy and truth, kindle within us the fire of Your Holy Spirit. Strengthen our hearts to believe, embolden our tongues to proclaim, and guide our steps to fulfill Your great commission. May our lives be a perpetual 'Alleluia!' until we meet You face to face. Amen.
