In the Secure Fold of the Divine Shepherd

This morning, we meditate upon the profound assurance of Christ, our Divine Shepherd. He knows His own, protects them from all harm, and bestows upon them the incomparable gift of eternal life. Let us heed His voice and abide in His secure and loving embrace.

My beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, and all who serve the Lord with fervent hearts, greetings from the quiet cloister as the dawn breaks this Eastertide Tuesday. As the world awakens to the gentle light, our souls are called to awaken to the eternal light of Christ, our Risen Lord. In our Morning Office, our hearts turn to the sacred words of the Gospel, where our Lord Jesus Christ reveals Himself as the Good Shepherd, a truth as ancient as the hills and as fresh as the morning dew.

Today, we hear His comforting voice echoing through the ages: "My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can snatch them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one." (John 10:27-30). Let us ponder these words, for in them lies the very essence of our salvation and the strength for our sacred mission.

The Shepherd Who Knows His Own

Behold, what a profound mystery and consolation is this! Our Lord does not merely tend to an undifferentiated flock; He knows each of us by name, with an intimacy that surpasses all human understanding. This divine recognition is not a casual acquaintance, but a deep, abiding knowledge rooted in everlasting love. He knows our strengths, our weaknesses, our hidden hopes, and our silent sorrows. He knows the very number of hairs on our heads, as the Scripture attests. This knowledge is not for judgment, but for tender care, for guidance, and for the restoration of our souls.

In a world often loud with conflicting voices and clamorous demands, to hear and recognize the voice of the Shepherd requires a cultivated stillness, a heart attuned to the frequency of divine truth. It is the voice that calls us to holiness, to charity, to sacrifice, and to mission. It is the voice that gently corrects, faithfully encourages, and ceaselessly invites us deeper into His Sacred Heart.

Unshakeable Security in His Hand

What peace, what unfathomable security is offered by His promise: "No one can snatch them out of my hand." Our lives on earth are fraught with trials, temptations, and tribulations that seek to pull us away from the path of righteousness. The enemy of our souls prowls like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Yet, Christ declares His sovereignty and His protective power. Our souls, entrusted to His Divine Hand, are safe, guarded by the very omnipotence of God.

This is not a passive security, but one that calls for our active cooperation. We remain in His hand by heeding His voice and following Him. This steadfast assurance empowers us, particularly those engaged in the arduous yet glorious work of Catholic missions. For when dangers loom, and despair threatens to engulf the zealous soul, the memory of His unshakeable grip dispels all fear. The work of evangelization, the nurturing of souls, the spreading of the Gospel—all proceed under the inviolable protection of the Divine Shepherd and the Heavenly Father, who are One.

The Promise of Eternal Life

The ultimate gift of the Good Shepherd is not merely protection in this life, but the bestowal of eternal life itself. This is not a distant, abstract concept, but a present reality that begins here and now, a participation in the very life of the Blessed Trinity through grace. It is the promise of unending communion with God, the beatific vision, the fulfillment of all our deepest longings. This sublime destiny is what fuels the Church's missionary mandate, for how can we keep such an incomparable treasure to ourselves?

Every act of charity, every prayer offered, every soul won for Christ, every artisan crafting sacred beauty for His glory—all contribute to this grand design of eternal life. We are co-laborers in the vineyard, bringing others into the fold where eternal life is freely given. To deny others the opportunity to hear His voice is to deny them the very gift of salvation.

Following the Shepherd's Voice

My dear ones, hearing the Shepherd's voice is but the first step; the Gospel commands us to follow. This following entails active discipleship: living out our faith with courage and conviction, partaking in the Sacraments, diligently studying Sacred Scripture, and performing acts of mercy and charity. It means discerning His will in our daily lives, often through the guidance of His Holy Church and the whisperings of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

"My sheep hear my voice," says the Lord. And St. John Chrysostom beautifully expounds, "This also He means, that He is a true shepherd, and that they are truly sheep; for they hear His voice, and follow Him, and do not listen to a stranger."

Let us resolve this day to listen more intently to the gentle, persistent call of our Divine Shepherd. Let us follow Him with unwavering trust, knowing that His guidance leads to green pastures and still waters, to the very fount of eternal life. And as we follow, let us be instruments of His voice and His hands, reaching out to those who have yet to hear, to those who stray, and to those who hunger for the security found only in His divine embrace. Through our prayers and our generous support of Catholic missions and sacred artisans, we help to extend His merciful fold across the whole world.

O Divine Shepherd, who lays down His life for His sheep, grant us the grace to always hear Your voice and to follow Your holy will. Keep us ever secure in Your sacred hands, and through us, draw all souls into Your loving fold, that all may inherit the promise of eternal life. Amen.
