Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As the first rays of this Thursday morn pierce the lingering shadows, painting the eastern sky with the soft hues of dawn, our hearts are called once more to contemplate the Risen Lord. We stand firm in the glorious season of Paschaltide, a time when the Church, our Holy Mother, resounds with the joyful Alleluia, a hymn to life triumphant over death. Each new day is a fresh summons to partake of the divine life won for us on the Cross and sealed in the empty tomb.
The Bread of Heaven for Our Earthly Journey
Today, our sacred readings invite us to ponder the profound mystery of Divine Sustenance. In the Gospel of Saint John, Our Lord declares with unwavering authority: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world" (John 6:51). What an immense gift, what boundless love! He offers Himself, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, as the very food for our immortal souls. Just as the Israelites were sustained by manna in the desert, so are we, pilgrims in this earthly wilderness, nourished by Christ Himself in the Most Holy Eucharist.
This is no mere symbolic repast, but a true communion with the Incarnate Word, a foretaste of the heavenly banquet. When we receive Him, we are not only cleansed and strengthened but intimately united to the source of all grace and life. This divine Manna prepares us for the arduous journey, granting us courage in tribulation, wisdom in discernment, and unfailing charity in all our dealings.
From Contemplation to Mission: The Works of Grace
Yet, this spiritual nourishment is not given for our solitary consumption alone. It is a fire meant to be shared, a light to illuminate the world. The Acts of the Apostles bear witness to this truth, showing us Saint Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit and emboldened by Christ's presence, healing Aeneas and raising Tabitha from the dead. The Church, sustained by her Lord, becomes an active instrument of His mercy and power. "The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers" (Acts 9:31).
This passage reminds us that when the Church is rooted in Christ, nourished by His sacraments, and guided by the Holy Spirit, she flourishes in both inner peace and outward mission. Our Lord's own flesh, given for the life of the world, calls us to extend that life, that hope, that charity to every corner of creation. This is the very heart of the Sanctus Mission—to support those who carry the light of Christ to distant lands and those who, through their sacred artistry, bring beauty and devotion into our midst, making manifest the goodness of God.
"O precious and wonderful banquet, that brings us salvation and contains all sweetness! What can be more precious than this sacrament, in which the very flesh of the Lord is given to us for our food, and the soul is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us?" — Saint Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica
Let us remember our blessed predecessor, Saint Pius V, whose memorial we also mark today. A Pope of profound faith and unyielding fidelity, he understood the vital necessity of sound doctrine and devout worship for the Church's mission. He strengthened the Church from within, reforming her liturgies and defending her truth, so that she might more effectively spread the Gospel without. His life serves as a beacon, reminding us that authentic mission flows from fervent communion with Christ.
A Daily Invitation to Divine Intimacy
Thus, dear friends, as you begin this new day, draw near to the Heart of Christ. Seek Him in the silence of prayer, in the sacred Scriptures, and most profoundly, in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Allow Him to be your daily sustenance, your strength, your wisdom. For it is from this intimate union that springs forth the grace to love, to serve, and to build up the Kingdom of God in our families, our communities, and throughout the world. May His Paschal joy fill your souls and empower your hands for every good work.
O Risen Lord, Bread of Life eternal, nourish our souls with Your divine presence. Strengthen us by Your grace to be Your hands and feet in this world, spreading Your light, truth, and charity to all, for the glory of Your Holy Name. Amen.
