My dearest brethren in Christ, as the radiant light of this Fifth Sunday of Easter dawns upon us, our hearts, still resonating with the triumph of our Risen Lord, are called to a profound contemplation of His enduring presence within His Holy Church. The sacred texts appointed for our meditation today beckon us to envision the very architecture of grace – a spiritual edifice built not of earthly stone and mortar, but of souls quickened by the Holy Spirit, with Christ Himself as the immutable cornerstone.
Christ, Our Immutable Cornerstone
The Apostle Peter, in his first Epistle, beautifully articulates this divine blueprint: “Come to him, a living stone, rejected by men but in God's sight chosen and precious; and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:4-5).
Consider, beloved, the profound significance of this image. Our Lord, reviled and cast aside by the world, is nonetheless the very foundation, the “chief cornerstone” (1 Peter 2:6) of God’s eternal design. Upon Him, all rests securely. He is the anchor of our hope, the unyielding truth in a world of shifting sands. Without Him, all our endeavors, all our aspirations, are but structures built upon shifting ground, destined to crumble.
The Spiritual House: Each Soul a Living Stone
And what is our part in this magnificent construction? We are called to be “living stones.” This is not a passive role, but one demanding vibrant faith and active participation. Each of us, through baptism, is engrafted into Christ, becoming a vital, animate part of His Mystical Body, the Church. Our prayers, our sacrifices, our acts of charity, our very lives lived in conformity with His will – these are the “spiritual sacrifices” offered to God.
Through our missionary endeavors, our support for the sacred arts, and indeed, every faithful endeavor of Sanctus Mission, we contribute to the building up of this spiritual house. Every soul brought to Christ, every chalice crafted with reverence, every vestment sewn with devotion, every act of mercy performed in His Name – these are elements of grace, cementing us together, stone by living stone, into a dwelling place for the Most High. We are not merely congregants, but active co-builders with the Divine Architect, laborers in His vineyard, artisans of His grace.
The Way, The Truth, and The Life
But how do we, imperfect beings, participate in such a divine work? Our Lord Himself provides the infallible guide. In today's Gospel, He declares with magnificent simplicity and profound depth: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6).
He is the Way – the path we must walk, marked by humility, obedience, and self-sacrificing love. He is the Truth – the divine wisdom that illuminates our minds, dispelling the shadows of error and doubt. He is the Life – the very breath of grace that animates our souls, enabling us to live not for ourselves, but for Him and for the salvation of souls.
To be a “living stone” means to be constantly gazing upon this Way, this Truth, and this Life. It means allowing His divine virtues to shape our character, His love to ignite our hearts, and His mission to direct our steps. When we truly follow Him, our actions, however small, become extensions of His own salvific work, building up the Kingdom of God on earth.
Consider the words of the great Mystic, Saint Teresa of Avila, who reminds us of our sacred duty:
‘Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which He looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which He blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are His body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.’What a powerful call to embrace our identity as living stones, as active members of His body! We are called to be His instruments, to be the visible manifestation of His love and grace in a world desperately yearning for Him.
Therefore, beloved brethren, let us embrace with renewed fervor our sacred calling. Let us strive each day to be more perfectly united to Christ, our Cornerstone, allowing His grace to purify and strengthen us. Let us, as living stones, actively participate in the building of His spiritual house, both within our own souls and throughout the world, through our prayers, our labors, and our generous support for the missions and artisans who bring His beauty and truth to all corners of the earth. May our lives be a perpetual offering, a spiritual sacrifice pleasing to God, building up His eternal Kingdom, one living stone at a time.
O Divine Architect, who founded Your Church upon the unwavering Cornerstone of Your Son, Jesus Christ, grant us the grace to be living stones, ever dedicated to building Your spiritual house through faith, charity, and steadfast service. May we always walk in Your Way, embrace Your Truth, and live by Your Life, for the glory of Your Name. Amen.
