The Shepherd's Voice in the Easter Dawn

This morning, let us open our hearts to the enduring truth of Christ, our Good Shepherd, whose voice calls us to abundant life. In the glory of Easter, we are reminded of His sacrificial love and His mission to gather all His sheep, inspiring our own zeal for spreading the Gospel.

Dearest brethren in Christ, and fellow laborers in the vineyard of our Lord, welcome to this new day, born of God’s eternal love. As the first rays of May’s light pierce the lingering shadows, painting the sky with the promise of Easter joy, let us turn our hearts and minds to the source of all light, our Risen Lord.

The Easter Alleluia, though some weeks passed, still resonates within the deepest chambers of our souls. It is a season not merely of remembrance, but of lived reality, where the victory of Christ over sin and death continually unfolds in our lives. And it is in this season of profound hope that Holy Mother Church, ever wise in her guidance, presents us with the comforting and challenging image of Christ, our Good Shepherd.

The Divine Shepherd's Unfailing Love

Today, our hearts are drawn to the sacred words of Saint John’s Gospel, where our Lord declares, "I am the Good Shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." (John 10:11). What a magnificent declaration of love! This is no mere metaphor, but a profound truth that defines the very essence of our salvation. Christ is not a hireling, who sees the wolf coming and flees, leaving the flock to scatter and perish. No, our Shepherd is one whose identity is inextricably bound to His flock, to each one of us.

He knows us, not with a superficial acquaintance, but with an intimate, divine knowledge that penetrates the depths of our being. "I know my sheep and my sheep know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father." (John 10:14-15). This knowledge is a wellspring of comfort and security. It means that in our joys and sorrows, our triumphs and failures, our Shepherd is profoundly present, understanding our every need, our every fear, our every longing. His love is not a distant, abstract principle, but a living, breathing reality, demonstrated by His willingness to lay down His very life upon the Cross for us, His beloved sheep.

This self-sacrifice is the ultimate act of charity, a testament to His unwavering commitment to our eternal welfare. In Him, we find not only protection but also abundant life, nourishment for our souls, and a safe pasture where we can truly flourish.

Called to Gather the Scattered Flock

Yet, the Good Shepherd’s heart is not content with merely gathering the sheep already within His immediate fold. He reveals a missionary zeal that ought to ignite our own: "And I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd." (John 10:16). This, dear friends, is the very heartbeat of "Sanctus Mission"!

These "other sheep" are the countless souls throughout the world who have yet to hear His voice, who wander in spiritual deserts, yearning for the green pastures of His truth and grace. They are found in distant lands, in forgotten villages, and even in the midst of our bustling cities, unaware of the divine Shepherd who seeks them. It is for their sake that missions are sent forth, that dedicated men and women endure hardship, that the beautiful craft of Catholic artisans creates beacons of faith and culture – all serving as extensions of the Good Shepherd's loving hands and voice.

Every prayer offered, every donation given to support those who carry the Gospel message, every artifact crafted with sacred intention, participates in this divine mission. We are called to be instruments in His hands, helping to bring about that glorious day when all will recognize and follow the one true Shepherd, gathered into the unity of His Mystical Body.

Living as the Shepherd's Own

How, then, do we, as individual members of His flock, live out this calling? First and foremost, by ever striving to know His voice. In a world inundated with countless clamoring voices – of fleeting pleasures, worldly ambitions, and insidious doubts – the Shepherd’s voice is clear, consistent, and life-giving. We hear it in the sacred Scriptures, in the teachings of Holy Mother Church, in the whisper of the Holy Spirit in our conscience, and most profoundly, in the Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist.

To follow Him means trust, surrender, and courage. It means embracing His holy will, even when it leads us through valleys of shadow, for we know He is with us. It means extending His love and mercy to our neighbors, reflecting His compassionate heart to those we encounter. Saint Gregory the Great, in his profound wisdom, reminds us of the true pastor's heart, which mirrors the Good Shepherd Himself:

"The true shepherd watches over his flock with a diligent eye, not with a view to his own advantage, but for the salvation of his sheep. He feeds them with the word, heals them with correction, protects them with vigilance, and defends them with his very life."

Let us strive to be such watchful and loving sheep, ever aware of His presence, ever obedient to His call, and ever zealous for the salvation of those "other sheep" whom He longs to bring into His fold. May our lives be a testament to His enduring love, shining forth as a light for all to see.

O Christ, our Good Shepherd, who laid down Your life for us, we thank You for Your unfailing love and vigilant care. Guide us this day in Your holy will, strengthen us in our faith, and ignite within us a fervent zeal to assist in gathering all Your scattered sheep into Your one, holy fold. Amen.
