The Abiding Joy of Christ's Love

This morning, let us open our hearts to the boundless love of Christ, a love that invites us to dwell intimately within its embrace. Discover how obedience to His sacred commands blossoms into a profound and complete joy, sustaining us in every moment of our pilgrim journey.

My dearest brothers and sisters in Christ, as the first rays of this new day illumine our world, let our hearts turn towards the Source of all light and life, Our Lord and Savior. We are in the glorious season of Easter, a time when the Church exults in the Resurrection, and our souls are called to a deeper communion with the Risen Christ. Today, as we enter into the quiet contemplation of the Morning Office, let us reflect upon a truth most sublime, drawn from the very lips of our Divine Master:

The Divine Invitation to Abide

The Gospel of John, ever a wellspring of profound spiritual wisdom, presents us with an exquisite invitation: “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Abide in my love.” (John 15:9). What a magnificent declaration! Our Lord does not merely love us; He loves us with the very same measure of love with which the Eternal Father loves Him. This is a love without beginning, without end, infinite in its depth and perfect in its purity. It is the love that spun the stars into being, that knit us in our mothers’ wombs, and that offered His only Son for our redemption.

To 'abide' in this love means to dwell, to remain, to make our home within it. It is not a fleeting visit, but a constant presence, a spiritual sanctuary where our souls can find rest and nourishment. Imagine a tender vine, drawing all its life and succor from the robust trunk to which it clings. So too are we called to cling to Christ, to be so deeply rooted in His charity that every fiber of our being is permeated by His grace. This abiding is the very core of our Christian existence, the wellspring from which all true holiness flows.

The Sweet Yoke of His Commandments

But how do we abide in such an ineffable love? Our Lord Himself gives us the answer, with crystal clarity: “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.” (John 15:10). At first glance, the word 'commandments' might evoke a sense of burden or obligation. Yet, when understood through the lens of divine love, these are not chains that bind, but rather pathways that lead to freedom and deeper union. Christ's commandments are expressions of His love, designed for our flourishing, for our sanctification.

To keep His commandments is to imitate Him, to walk in His footsteps. It means to love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves. It means to forgive, to serve, to humble ourselves, to seek justice, to embrace purity, and to live with charity. Far from being onerous, this obedience, born of love, becomes a joyful affirmation of our desire to draw closer to Him. It is the practical outworking of our spiritual longing, a tangible response to His infinite mercy. In every act of faithfulness, we deepen our dwelling in His most Sacred Heart.

The Fullness of Christ's Joy

And what is the fruit of this abiding love and loving obedience? Our Lord reveals it plainly: “I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11). This is not the fleeting happiness that the world offers, dependent on circumstance or material gain. This is Christ's own joy – a deep, abiding, supernatural gladness that transcends all earthly sorrows and tribulations. It is a joy born of union with God, a peace that the world cannot give, nor take away.

This joy is complete because it participates in the perfect felicity of God Himself. It is a foretaste of Heaven, a spiritual strength that enables us to bear crosses with fortitude and to face challenges with serene confidence. When we abide in His love and live by His commands, His joy becomes our joy, filling every crevice of our soul, making our journey bright even in the darkest valleys.

“True devotion consists in a certain spiritual cheerfulness, which shows itself in the exterior as well as in the interior.” – Saint Francis de Sales

Let us, therefore, strive each day to sink deeper into the ocean of Christ's love, to embrace His divine precepts not as duties, but as expressions of our profound affection for Him. In doing so, we shall indeed find that joy, His own incomparable joy, dwelling within us, full and complete.

O Divine Lord, grant us the grace to ever abide in Your holy love, to embrace Your sweet commands, and to taste the fullness of Your abiding joy, now and forever. Amen.
