The Spirit's Counsel and Our Sacred Trust

As we stand between the glorious Ascension and the anticipation of Pentecost, we are called to embrace the 'whole counsel of God' with steadfast hearts. This morning, reflect on the sacred deposit of faith entrusted to us and our call to unity and unwavering witness, guided by the coming Holy Spirit.

Brethren in Christ, beloved souls gathered this morning in prayer and contemplation, grace and peace be with you. We stand in a profound moment of the liturgical year, a hallowed space between the glorious triumph of Our Lord's Ascension into heaven and the imminent outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. These are days of expectant waiting, a sacred pause where the Church, like the Apostles in the Upper Room, awaits the Divine Paraclete with open hearts.

The Sacred Deposit of Truth

Today, our meditation draws us to the farewell words of Saint Paul to the elders of Ephesus, as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 20:17-27). There, the great Apostle declares, “I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.” What a profound and weighty declaration! It is not merely a portion, not merely agreeable truths, but the entirety of God's revealed wisdom, His divine plan for salvation, His unblemished truth.

This “whole counsel of God” is the sacred deposit of faith, entrusted to the Church from the Apostles, passed down through the ages by our Holy Fathers, and safeguarded by the Magisterium. It is the pearl of great price, the treasure hidden in a field, for which we must be willing to sacrifice all. For us, as monks, scholars, missionaries, and artisans, this “whole counsel” is both our guiding star and our sacred duty. We are called not only to receive it but to preserve it, proclaim it, and, through our lives and our works, make it shine forth for all the world.

Unity in the Unblemished Truth

In the Gospel reading, we hear Our Lord's High Priestly Prayer (John 17:1-11), a moving plea for unity: “that they may be one, as we are one.” This unity is not a mere human agreement but a supernatural communion, rooted in the shared truth of God. It is precisely the “whole counsel of God” that forms the unbreakable bond of this unity, enabling us to be “one in the Father and the Son,” through the power of the Holy Spirit.

As Saint Irenaeus of Lyons, a venerable Father of the Church, wisely taught:

“For the Church, though dispersed throughout the whole world, even to the ends of the earth, has received from the apostles and their disciples this faith... and carefully preserves it, as dwelling in one house, and believes these points [of doctrine] just as if she had one soul, and one and the same heart, and proclaims them, and teaches them, and hands them down, with perfect unanimity, as if she possessed only one mouth.”

This “perfect unanimity” springs from an unwavering fidelity to the sacred truth. As we prepare for Pentecost, let us pray fervently that the Holy Spirit will deepen this unity within the Church, strengthening every believer, every missionary, every artisan, to speak and live the “whole counsel of God” with one voice and one heart.

Our Call to Witness and Mission

To declare the “whole counsel of God” is the very essence of mission. Whether through the diligent study of theology, the bold proclamation of the Gospel in distant lands, or the creation of sacred art that lifts the soul to God, each act becomes a testament to this divine inheritance. Sanctus Mission, by supporting those who embark on these holy endeavors, participates directly in this apostolic task – ensuring that the truth, beauty, and goodness of our Catholic Faith are neither diminished nor forgotten, but rather shine brightly for future generations.

Let us, therefore, with minds renewed and hearts aflame, stand ready to receive the Spirit anew. Let us resolve to guard the sacred deposit of faith with vigilance, to proclaim it with courage, and to live it with unwavering devotion. For in doing so, we not only fulfill Our Lord's prayer for unity but also participate in His ongoing mission to glorify the Father and sanctify the world.

O Holy Spirit, Spirit of Truth and Unity, enlighten our minds and inflame our hearts, that we may ever know, embrace, and faithfully declare the whole counsel of God, for the glory of the Father and the salvation of souls. Amen.
