The Unfathomable Charity of the Father

Today, we ponder the radical call to perfect charity, echoing Christ's admonition to love even our enemies. This reflection delves into the divine nature of such love, revealing it as the surest path to spiritual perfection and true imitation of our Heavenly Father.

My dearest brethren in Christ, as the first rays of the sun pierce the morning mist and illumine our cloisters and homes, let us pause and turn our hearts, ever-attentive, to the boundless mercy and wisdom of Almighty God. This new day, a fresh gift from His providential hand, calls us not merely to toil, but to a deeper contemplation of His divine will for our souls and for the sanctification of the world.

The Sublime Command: Love Without Measure

This morning, our minds are drawn to that most sublime and, for our fallen nature, most arduous command given by Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Gospel: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matthew 5:43-45).

This is no mere human counsel, nor a simple suggestion for good etiquette. Nay, brethren, it is a divine imperative, a profound call to participate in the very life and essence of God. For who among us, left to our own devices, can truly embrace such a precept? Our human heart, wounded by sin, naturally recoils from injury and seeks justice, or worse, retribution. But Christ, our Divine Physician, calls us to transcend these earthly limitations, to reach for a supernatural charity that mirrors the infinite perfection of God Himself.

Children of the Heavenly Father

The Lord’s admonition is clear: by loving our enemies, by praying for those who persecute us, we become “children of your Father in heaven.” This is the pathway to true spiritual sonship, to reflecting the very attributes of the Most High. For does not our Heavenly Father pour forth His blessings indiscriminately? Does He not sustain all creation, both the righteous and the unrighteous? His love is not earned, but freely given; it is not conditional, but steadfast and universal. To imitate this divine magnanimity is to journey towards that perfect charity which is the very bond of perfection.

This arduous ascent requires a radical transformation of our interior life. It demands a crucifying of the ego, a surrender of our wounded pride, and an unwavering reliance upon God’s grace. It is not an easy path, for it means forgiving the unforgivable, extending kindness to those who have shown us malice, and praying with genuine fervor for those who wish us ill. Yet, in this very struggle lies our sanctification, our purification, and our growth in Christ-likeness.

The Virtue of Charity

Saint Thomas Aquinas, that luminous Doctor of the Church, reminds us of the paramount importance of this virtue:

“The love of charity extends to one's enemies.” — Summa Theologiae, II-II, q. 25, a. 8

Indeed, this extension of love to those who are least lovable in our eyes is the crucible in which true charity is forged. It is not a sentimental feeling, but a firm resolve of the will, sustained by grace, to desire the good of all, even those who cause us pain. It is through this active love that we truly participate in the redemptive work of Christ, breaking cycles of hatred and sowing seeds of divine grace in a world so desperately in need of healing.

Let us not be discouraged by the enormity of this task. For God does not command the impossible; He commands what is possible through His grace working within us. Each act of forgiveness, each silent prayer for a persecutor, each moment of patience in the face of injustice, is a triumph of grace, a step closer to the celestial perfection to which we are called. It builds up the Mystical Body of Christ and inspires others, showing forth the radical beauty of the Gospel.

A Prayer for Perfect Charity

Let us therefore resolve, my dear brethren, to cultivate this divine charity with renewed vigor. Let our hearts be enlarged by the boundless love of Christ, that we may become true reflections of our Heavenly Father to a world longing for light and truth. May our lives, imbued with this supernatural love, be a beacon for all, a testament to the transformative power of God’s grace.

Oh, Divine Love, kindle in our hearts the fire of Your perfect charity, that we may love as You love, forgive as You forgive, and thereby attain the blessed perfection of Your children. Grant us the grace to pray for those who despitefully use us, and to see Your image in every soul, even our enemies. Amen.
