My dearest brothers and sisters in Christ, pilgrims on this earthly journey and cherished supporters of Sanctus Mission,
As the first rays of dawn illuminate our cells and chapels, and as the world begins its daily clamor, let us, like the Saints of old, pause to consecrate this day, its labors, and its prayers to Him who is our Alpha and Omega. The Morning Office calls us to lift our hearts and minds above the transient, fixing our gaze upon the eternal verities that nourish the soul.
Today, our meditation is illuminated by the luminous words of Our Lord from the Gospel, words that invite both profound introspection and steadfast action. For He admonishes us: “Do not give what is holy to dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.” (Matthew 7:6)
Cherishing the Sacred Trust
What are these “holy things” and “pearls” but the sacred truths of our Faith, the sacraments, the very grace of God, and the interior gifts of the Holy Spirit? Our Lord calls us to a holy discernment, to cherish these spiritual treasures within the sanctuary of our souls and to guard them with reverence. This does not imply a refusal to share the Gospel, for mission is our very mandate, but rather a wise stewardship of the divine mysteries. It reminds us that there are times for quiet contemplation and protection of the interior life, lest the precious seeds of grace be scattered thoughtlessly where they cannot take root. Let us guard our hearts and minds, choosing wisely what we allow to enter, and to whom we entrust the profound sharing of our spiritual journey.
The Golden Thread of Charity
Yet, lest we fall into a solitary piety, Our Lord immediately provides the indispensable balance, the very heart of the Law and the Prophets: “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, you also do to them.” (Matthew 7:12). Ah, the Golden Rule! A simple yet profound truth that transcends all cultures and times, it is the radiant gem of Christian ethics. This is the very foundation of all true mission and all authentic community. It calls us not to passive reception, but to active, selfless giving. To love our neighbor as ourselves is to see Christ in each person, to anticipate their needs, to offer compassion, and to extend mercy. This is the very breath of Sanctus Mission – to do unto others as Christ has done unto us, bringing the light of faith and the dignity of craftsmanship to those yearning for beauty and truth.
Embracing the Narrow Gate
Finally, Our Lord presents us with a most solemn exhortation: “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14). My dear friends, let us not be daunted by the seeming difficulty of this path. The “narrow gate” is not a path of joyless austerity, but one of radical love, of choosing Christ above all earthly attachments. It demands detachment from sin, from excessive worldly comforts, and from self-will. It is a path of humility, obedience, and constant conversion. It is “difficult” because it demands courage – the courage to swim against the tide of secularism, to forgive when it is hard, to pray when we are weary, to serve when we desire rest.
As Saint Francis de Sales wisely teaches us: “If you wish to go to Paradise, you must have courage to take the narrow path.”
This courage, however, is not born of our own strength alone, but of divine grace. Each morning, as we turn our hearts to God, we receive anew the strength needed to walk this blessed path. Let us resolve today to cherish the sacred, to practice the Golden Rule with renewed fervor, and to press forward through the narrow gate, knowing that true freedom and everlasting joy await us on the other side, in the boundless heart of God.
May your day be filled with grace, purpose, and the abiding presence of our Risen Lord.
O Divine Master, grant us today the grace to cherish Your sacred truths, to extend Your boundless charity to all we meet, and to walk with unwavering faith through the narrow gate that leads to eternal life. Amen.
