As the bell for Matins echoes through the cold stone cloisters before the first light of day, the monastic soul naturally seeks the quiet radiance of her who is the Morning Star. On this sacred Saturday, the Church Universal celebrates the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the silence of our choir stalls, we contemplate how a humble maiden of Nazareth was elevated above the highest choirs of angels, receiving a royal crown woven from the gold of perfect charity and the pearls of her silent suffering.
The Crowned Handmaid of Nazareth
To mortal eyes, royalty demands earthly power, vast legions, and glittering thrones. Yet in the kingdom of the Eternal King, true sovereignty is measured by the depth of one’s conformity to the Divine Will. Our Lady’s queenly dignity does not diminish her profound humility; rather, it springs directly from it. When she uttered her sacred Fiat to the Archangel Gabriel, she laid the foundation of her throne at the feet of the Almighty. Her reign is not one of earthly dominion, but of motherly intercession and overflowing grace.
Consider how the holy fathers and doctors of the Church have ever marveled at this royal mystery. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, whose heart burned with seraphic devotion for the Mother of God, offers us this perennial consolation for our morning journey:
“If the winds of temptation arise, if you are driven upon the rocks of tribulation, look to the star, call upon Mary. If you are tossed upon the waves of pride, of ambition, of envy, of rivalry, look to the star, call upon Mary. With her for a guide, you shall never go astray; while invoking her, you shall never despair; thinking of her, you shall not err.”
Our Lady’s sovereignty is entirely relative to the Kingship of her Divine Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. She is the Queen Mother—the Gebirah of the New Covenant—who stands at the right hand of the King, presenting the petitions of His poor servants with an efficacy born of maternal intimacy.
Refuge Beneath the Regal Mantle
As you step into the duties and anxieties of this day, do not carry the burdens of the world upon your own frail shoulders. The Queen of Heaven is not a distant sovereign locked behind golden gates; she is an attentive Mother whose royal mantle is wide enough to shelter every contrite heart. The spiritual combats of our age—the noise, the distractions, the subtle discouragements—are conquered when we place ourselves within her immaculate care.
To serve Mary is to reign with Christ. When we offer our daily labors, our hidden trials, and our morning prayers through her pure hands, she purifies them, adorns them with her own merits, and presents them before the throne of the Trinity. Let us then approach her with filial confidence, knowing that the Queen of Mercy never turns away a soul that seeks her holy protection.
O Sovereign Queen of Heaven and Earth, glorious Mother of the Eternal King, we offer Thee the firstfruits of this day. Shelter us beneath the shadow of thy holy mantle, defend us from the snares of the ancient serpent, and direct our hearts toward the sweet Will of thy Divine Son. Guide our feet in the ways of peace, so that after this earthly exile, we may contemplate thy radiant beauty in the courts of the Heavenly Jerusalem. Amen.
