The Sacred Tree of Life: Exaltation of the Holy Cross

As the twilight of dawn yields to the morning light, the monastic choir sings of the instrument of our salvation. On this Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we contemplate the scandal that became our triumph and the wood that bore the Prince of Peace. Lift your heart in the Morning Office to the King who reigns from the Tree.

The Dawn of Redemption

In the quiet stillness of the monastic choir, before the first bell of Lauds breaks the morning mist, our eyes are drawn upward to the crucifix resting above the high altar. On this fourteenth day of September, the Church throughout the world pauses in solemn joy to celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. We remember both the miraculous recovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena and Emperor Heraclius, and the far greater victory accomplished upon its wood by our Lord Jesus Christ.

As monks, our daily life revolves around the rhythm of the Divine Office, but on this feast, our chanting takes on a tone of royal splendor. The cross is no longer merely a sign of suffering; it is the imperial standard of the King of Kings, unfurled against the darkness of the world.

The Scandal Transfigured into Glory

To the ancient world, the cross was an instrument of ignominy, a brutal tool of Roman execution meant to terrify and humble. Yet, by the mystery of the Incarnation and the Paschal Sacrifice, Christ transformed this tree of curse into the Tree of Life. Where the first Adam stretched forth his hand to take the forbidden fruit in disobedience, the New Adam stretched forth His holy hands to be nailed to the wood in perfect love and obedience to the Father.

In the quiet of our morning reflection, we are invited to consider this holy paradox. The heavy beam of wood became the altar of the cosmic sacrifice; the drops of precious Blood became the dew that refreshed a parched creation. Through the Cross, death was trampled down by death, and eternal life shone forth upon a fallen world.

The Voice of the Fathers

The Holy Fathers of the Church never ceased to marvel at this sacred mystery. As Saint Andrew of Crete proclaimed in his celebrated sermon for this very feast:

“The Cross is named the exaltation of Christ, for on it He was lifted up and offered Himself to the Father for us. Had there been no Cross, Christ would not have been crucified. Had there been no Cross, life would not have been nailed to the tree. If life had not been nailed to it, there would be no streams of immortality flowing from His side, nor would the divine document of our sin have been canceled.”

Saint Andrew reminds us that the Cross is not an emblem of defeat, but the very throne from which Christ exercises His merciful reign over human history. When we gaze upon the Crucified One, we do not see a vanquished martyr, but the divine Physician curing the ancient bite of the serpent.

Taking Up the Royal Banner Today

How do we, in our modern world, share in the exaltation of the Cross? We do so whenever we willingly unite our daily trials, silent suffering, and hidden duties to the sacrifice of the Savior. The monastic life teaches us that the smallest act of obedience, done out of love for God, carries the weight of eternity when joined to the wood of the Cross.

As you step into the labor of this day, do not shrink from the burdens that lie before you. Offer your morning endeavors, your patient endurance, and your silent prayers as sweet incense at the foot of the Tree of Life. Let the sign of the Cross be upon your lips, your heart, and your actions, for it is the weapon of our salvation and the glory of our faith.

Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory, who didst stretch out Thine arms upon the precious wood of the Cross to gather all nations unto Thyself: grant that we, who celebrate this day the Exaltation of Thy Holy Cross, may ever glory in Thy saving passion. Enlighten our minds this morning with the radiance of Thy victory, and grant us grace to take up our daily crosses with serene confidence and joyful love. Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.
